The erectile dysfunction drug Viagra was developed by Pfizer to help men with impotence regain their erection.
Viagra, which is still on the market, has been on the market since the 1990s but it has been facing generic competition, leading to a decline in sales.
The decline comes despite Pfizer's best-selling drug, sildenafil, keeping sales in the low single digits.
Sales of Viagra had already fallen to less than $1 billion in 2010 from $6 billion in 2013, according to IMS Health.
The pharmaceutical company told The Independent the decline could be down to factors such as cheaper packaging, lower prices, and cheaper competitors.
Pfizer said sales of Viagra had been flat for the first half of 2013 and the drug had also been negatively impacted by generic competition.
In November, the company said sales of the drug had increased by about 20 per cent from a year earlier. It added that the drug had "sustained effectiveness and side effects" in treating erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, whose patent expires in 2017, will now be available through pharmacies in the US.
The company said it would work with pharmacists and other health professionals to address the problem and ensure patients get the right treatment for their condition.
Sales of the drug had been in line with the sales of a rival treatment, known as sildenafil citrate, which is available in generic form.
Sales of the drug also have been in line with the sales of another erectile dysfunction drug, tadalafil.
Tadalafil, the generic version of Viagra, has been on the market since the late 1990s but the drug's patent has expired, limiting its use.
Tadalafil sales had fallen to about $300 million in the last quarter, according to IMS Health. The generic version of tadalafil sales had also fallen.
Pfizer said it was confident of keeping sales of the drug in the single digits, although it said the patent had "not been granted in the best interests of patients".
The drug, which also contains an ingredient called sildenafil, has a similar effect as Viagra, the main erectile dysfunction treatment.

The drug is still on the market but generic competition has been in the process of reducing the number of prescriptions required for its treatment.
